About Ocean Trust/National Fisheries Institute
The mission of Ocean Trust is to provide a balanced
source of information on ocean issues and innovative
solutions that bridge the interests of science, conservation
and food production for humanity. In order to support
and accomplish this mission, Ocean Trust is a member
supported, ocean conservation foundation directed by
scientists, naturalists, chefs, musicians, and fishermen
who share an interest in the ocean and a dependence
on its resources. Ocean Trust conducts research, education,
and environmental enhancement projects on fishery, ocean
wildlife and marine ecosystem issues. Ocean Trust also
works with the seafood industry and administers habitat
restoration and marine conservation programs for the
National Fisheries Institute.
The National Fisheries Institute is the nation’s
leading trade association representing all aspects of
the seafood industry. NFI acts to ensure an ample, sustainable,
and safe seafood supply for consumers and to strengthen
its member’s ability to succeed in the worldwide
seafood industry.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/Ocean Trust/National Fisheries Institute
partnership was originally formed in 2000 with a Joint
Project Agreement (JPA). Under this Agreement, three
projects were funded for a total of $78,000. The projects
from the JPA were continued into the Habitat Restoration
Partnership, which was formed in 2001. During the first
three-year partnership, $400,000 of NOAA funds were
matched 1:1 by Ocean Trust and volunteer participation
of NFI member organizations to conduct 19 restoration
projects benefitting commercially important fishery
species. Funds through this partnership are used to
further engage NFI and industry member organizations,
as well as provide technical resources to many in the
fish and seafood industry who want to address the threats
pollution and coastal development have on essential
habitat for fish and shellfish.
Request For Proposals
