Severe Weather Strikes the Region

An upper level disturbance moving south from the Dakotas interacted with a slow moving surface boundary in an unstable atmosphere to spark off thunderstorms across portions of Western and North Central Nebraska on Friday night.  A few of these thunderstorms developed into intense long track supercells, with numerous reports of damaging hail received at the National Weather Service Office in North Platte.  The path of the severe weather occurred from Eastern Hooker County south through McPherson, Western Lincoln, and Hayes Counties.  The largest hail reported was 3 inches in diameter from a Coop Observer 15 miles south of Mullen.  Baseball sized hail was reported west of North Platte and northeast of Sutherland, and numerous reports of quarter and golf ball sized were received.

On Saturday morning a team from the National Weather Service Office in North Platte conducted a damage survey, following up on the reports of home and crop damage received Friday night.   Numerous homes, especially on the eastern side of Sutherland and just to the northeast of town, sustained window and siding damage.  Homeowners which were spoken to reported generally golf ball sized hail that was wind blown, striking their homes from more of a horizontal direction.  The team then traveled south of Sutherland on Highway 25 toward Wallace.  Many of the crops along the route had sustained damage, some fields much worse than others.  In the town of Wallace, there was once again a number of homes which had sustained window and siding damage.

There was one report of a tornado touchdown Friday night 7 miles south of Sutherland.  This touchdown was brief in open rangeland with no damage.  No injury reports have been received by the National Weather Service from any of Friday night's storms.
