Tornadoes of March 28, 2007

National Weather Service employees conducted damage surveys on March 29, 2007 in Keith and Perkins Counties.
 
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NORTH PLATTE WISHES TO THANK THE LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AND COUNTY OFFICIALS INVOLVED IN THE VARIOUS DAMAGE SURVEYS ACROSS WESTERN AND NORTH CENTRAL NEBRASKA. THE INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THESE INDIVIDUALS WAS CRUCIAL IN THE ULTIMATE COMPLETION OF AND CONTINUATION OF THE DAMAGE SURVEYS.

Ogallala, Nebraska Tornado

The tornado that damaged the west edge of Ogallala on the evening of March 28, 2007 touched down just south of Highway 30 and the railroad tracks and west of the grain bins on the western edge of town.  Based on the damage the tornado moved to the North-Northeast and was on the ground for an 1/8 of a mile. The damage surveyed included two roofs blown off UP out buildings near the railroad tracks and damage to a pickup truck. Just to the north of Highway 30 and west of the Ogallala Stockyards, several stock trailers were over turned, 3 out buildings were destroyed, and irrigation pipes were blown around at a private residence.  Further north, at Baltzell Veterinary Clinic an outbuilding was destroyed and there was damage to some animal pens. Debris was also found to the north of the Vet Clinic, but no damage was found to the north. Power lines were down all along the path and tree damage was also found along the path. Based on the damage, wind speeds  were estimated at 90-100 mph, rating this tornado an F1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale.  Damage was also noted north of Ogallala near Lake McConaughy.

SOUTHWESTERN KEITH COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA...
THIS INCLUDES THE CITY OF OGALLALA...
NORTHWESTERN PERKINS COUNTY IN SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA...

Meteorologists in the area reported a tornado touchdown on the southwest edge of Ogallala at 811 pm MDT. The city of Ogallala had a 28 minute lead time.

Grant, Nebraska Tornado


ACROSS PERKINS COUNTY...THE TORNADOES DAMAGED SEVERAL HOMES AND OUTBUILDINGS...ALONG WITH NUMEROUS POWER POLES AND GRAIN BINS. AT LEAST ONE HOUSE WAS DESTROYED...THOUGH NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THOUGH SEVERAL TORNADOES WERE REPORTED...ONE OF THE TORNADOES PRODUCED THE MAJORITY OF DAMAGE AND HAD A MAXIMUM WIDTH OF APPROXIMATELY ONE HALF MILE...AND A PATH LENGTH OF APPROXIMATELY 17 MILES IN PERKINS COUNTY. THIS TORNADO REACHED A MAXIMUM INTENSITY OF F2 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE...WITH A MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WIND SPEED OF APPROXIMATELY 120 MPH. AS PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED...SEVERAL WEAKER TORNADOES OCCURRED SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH THIS MAIN TORNADO.

Arthur County Tornado

A SURVEY OF DAMAGES IN ARTHUR COUNTY...CAUSED BY TORNADOES WEDNESDAY EVENING...WAS CONDUCTED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN NORTH PLATTE ON FRIDAY. FROM EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS AND DAMAGE ESTIMATES...IT APPEARS THAT THE TORNADO IN ARTHUR COUNTY TOUCHED DOWN APPROXIMATELY 3 MILES NORTH OF THE ARTHUR AND KEITH COUNTY LINE...IN EXTREME SOUTHWEST ARTHUR COUNTY. THE TORNADO WAS THEN ON THE GROUND INTERMITTENTLY FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES BEFORE LIFTING IN NORTHWEST ARTHUR COUNTY. BECAUSE OF THE RURAL NATURE OF THE AREA IN THE PATH OF THIS TORNADO...VERY LITTLE DAMAGE OCCURRED IN WESTERN ARTHUR COUNTY. HOWEVER...IT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR DESTROYING APPROXIMATELY 160 FEET OF WINDBREAK NEAR A RESIDENCE IN SOUTHWEST ARTHUR COUNTY...APPROXIMATELY 10 MILES SOUTH AND 11 MILES WEST OF THE COMMUNITY OF ARTHUR. NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED AS A RESULT OF THIS TORNADO.

THE TORNADO IS BELIEVED TO HAVE REACHED A MAXIMUM INTENSITY OF F1 ON THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE...WITH WINDS APPROACHING 90 MPH AT TIMES.
