SPHERE - Students as Professionals Helping Educators Research the Earth

SPHERE has been designed as a research and education program promoting the engagement of students from all backgrounds in NASA Earth System Science discovery. Undergraduate students will be working with scientists from partner universities and NASA Langley during an intensive summer internship. In 2006, the participating students came from 5 different institutions from 3 different states. Undergraduate research posters will be presented at appropriate regional and national conferences. In addition, this program looks to foster the growth of the study of the Earth system at elementary and secondary levels through teacher training and support in GLOBE protocols. Teachers from 4 different school divisions participated in the first workshop in summer 2006. During the academic year, undergraduate students will assist teachers in the classroom to implement the use of NASA-related science and data into inquiry lessons.
