Fire Tools

Many tools help evaluate the potential for various types of fire behavior and the effect of different kinds of hazardous fuel treatments.

These tools are known as “decision-support tools.” They can be used by managers and others to provide a set of plausible scenarios or outcomes based on a specific situation or multiple options.

Community Socioeconomic Information System (CSIS)

CSIS is a tool that allows users to retrieve 1990 and 2000 U.S. census data to examine conditions and trends for communities in western Washington, western Oregon, and northern California. The tool includes socioeconomic data for 1,314 communities in the entire region, including incorporated and unincorporated places.

EMDS

The Ecosystem Management Decision Support (EMDS) system is an application framework for knowledge-based decision support of ecological assessments at any geographic scale. The system integrates a state-of-the-art geographic information system (GIS) that provides decision support for a substantial portion of the adaptive management process of ecosystem management.

FishXing 3.0: an interactive software tool with over 150 new features has been released to assist engineers, hydrologists, and fish biologists in the evaluation and design of culverts for aquatic organism passage.

BIOPAK

BIOPAK (Means et al. 1994) is a menu-driven package of computer programs for personal computers that calculates the biomass, area, height, length, or volume of plant components (leaves, branches, stem, crown, and roots) and biomass by fuels size classes by using existing prediction equations.

My Fuel Treatment Planner

My Fuel Treatment Planner software can be used to estimate costs, revenues, economic impacts, and surface fuels associated with fuel reduction treatments in the western US.

SnagPRO

SnagPRO (Version 1.0) software analyzes log, snag, and tree densities based on peer-reviewed, scientific sampling protocols. It was specifically developed to analyze log, snag, and tree data in support of sampling methods presented in general technical reports (Bate and others) that will be published by the PNW Research Station in 2008.

EnVision

EnVision is designed to be a full-featured rendering system for stand- and landscape-scale images. Applicable projects range from a few to several thousand acres. The system is based on many of the original concepts used to develop the Vantage Point visualization system. However, EnVision does not attempt to model changes to the landscape over time.

DecAID

DecAID is an advisory tool to help managers evaluate effects,of forest conditions and existing or proposed management activities on organisms that use snags and down wood. DecAID also can help managers decide on snag and down wood sizes and levels needed to help meet wildlife management objectives.

Financial Analysis

This page includes software that performs financial evaluation of ecosystem management activities in the northern inland West, financial evaluation of pruning ponderosa pine (upgrade), and much more.

DATABASES

INSECT DAMAGE DATABASE

This database is a collection of notes on thousands of insect and damage specimens from forests or wood products taken mainly in the United States, some from Canada, Mexico, Central America, South America and other regions.

FUNGI DATABASE

This database includes Columbia River basin fungi. Creation of the database was supported by the University of Michigan.

QUERCUS GARRYANA BIBLIOGRAPHY ENDNOTE® DATABASE

A bibliography was prepared for Quercus garryana and botanically related and geographically associated species.

WestPro

An Excel spreadsheet add-in for simulating growth and yield of uneven-aged Douglas-fir forests in the Pacific Northwest.
