As a young accounting grad from San Jose State University, Jess Gutierrez knew he would not see the world from behind his desk at American Savings and Loan.  After two years working towards completion of his CPA program, he decided to leave the world of accounting behind and attend the US Navy’s prestigious Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS).

Upon graduation from AOCS, Jess was selected to attend the A-6 Intruder flight training program at Whidbey Island, WA before being assigned to VA-196, an aircraft carrier-based A-6 attack squadron attached to the USS Constellation.  Jess logged over 300 aircraft carrier landings and 1200 tactical jet hours during his 8½ years as a Naval Aviator and Officer.

In 1992, Jess ended his Navy career and decided to put his accounting skills to use working with a tax franchise in Portland, Oregon. He received his LTC, and then in 1995 founded Pacific Northwest Tax Service, Inc. Today, Pacific Northwest Tax Service operates three year-round offices in the Portland Metro area and runs a licensed vocational tax school offering classroom and correspondence courses.

Jess spends his free time flying his Beechcraft Bonanza airplane.  On the ground, he enjoys time with his family, as well as golf, camping and travel.

Dorothy Hudson, LTC, EA --- Klamath Falls, Oregon
Terms in Office: 02/15/08 - 04/09/09
Subcommittees:  Examination & Education

Dorothy received her preparer's license in 1981 thinking it would be a good part time job while raising her family. It never quite worked out that way, she has been busy ever since! She received her LTC license two years later and in 1985 she was recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as one of the "top twenty" on the enrolled agent exam. She has been operating an independent tax and accounting firm since 1991, and began teaching both basic and advanced classes in 1986. She is known around the state as an interesting and informative speaker.

Dorothy and her husband, Michael, were high school sweethearts. They have raised 4 children, and now have 7 grandchildren. She is actively involved with the youth group at her church and spends many weekends at dances and activities. Her hobbies have been "whatever her children were doing" and they now include "whatever her grandchildren are doing", spending many hours on bleachers at a ballgame, race track, or being towed on an inner tube behind a speed boat! She is looking forward to :serving on the tax board and the knowledge that she will gain there.

Janis Salisbury, LTC, EA --- Gladstone, Oregon
Terms in Office: 07/01/08 - 06/30/11
Subcommittees:  Examination & Education

After graduating from Washington State University, Jan taught in public schools for ten years. A change in career took her to the IRS for six years. Opportunities arose allowing her to follow another passion and to open a business. She became licensed as both a Licensed Tax Consultant and an Enrolled Agent. Her firm has focused on tax preparation and bookkeeping in the Oregon City area. Within a short time she was back to teaching, using her educational training, providing CPE classes and, for several years, a Basic Income Tax Preparation class at Clackamas Community College. During this same time she co-authored and later singularly authored a textbook used by several schools throughout the state. You can still find her teaching, even though she recently sold her tax preparation business.

Jan’s husband retired as a middle school history teacher and is now enjoying a second career as a National Park Ranger for Fort Vancouver. Her two sons and families live in the Portland metro area where she is able to thoroughly enjoy her four grandchildren.

During the years Jan has been involved, not only with professional groups, but also with numerous leadership and charitable organizations like Jayceettes, Oregon City Library Board, Oregon Trail Pageant, church committees, and the Board of Tax Practitioners.

Jan is looking forward to the opportunity of pulling all these experiences and skills together to best serve the tax practitioner profession.
