Definition

Through the Uniform Crime Reporting Program, the FBI collects the number of offenses for the crimes of murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. In addition to the number of offenses known to the police, the FBI also collects supplementary information about these offenses, such as the locations of robberies, time of day of burglaries, and other analyses about the offenses. These expanded data also include trends (2-, 5-, and 10- year comparisons) in crime and rates per 100,000 inhabitants. Expanded homicide data, (details about murders such as the age, sex, and race of both the victim and the offender, the weapon used in the homicide, the circumstances surrounding the offense, and the relationship of the victim to the offender) are also available.

Data collection

Expanded offense data, including expanded homicide data, are collected separately from the actual counts of crimes. Therefore, law enforcement can report an offense without providing the additional data.
