I recently applied for benefits. How do I get a password?
  Question
I recently applied for benefits. How do I get a password?
  Answer

If you answered "Yes" to the question about doing business online with Social Security, you will get a letter from us that provides instructions for creating a permanent password. You should get the letter within 15 days after we approve your application.

If you answered “No” and have changed your mind, you can get a password online or on the phone, once we have approved your application.

Establishing a password involves three steps. You can do this on the Internet:

Step 1 To create a permanent password, you need a Password Request Code (PRC). Apply for a Temporary Password Request Code (PRC).
Step 2 Wait at least 15 days for your PRC letter to come in the mail.
Step 3 Create your permanent password using the directions in your PRC letter.

Or you can do this by telephone:

• Call us at 1-800-772-1213.
• Listen carefully to the menu choices and follow the instructions.
