The Democratic Republic of Sao Tome and Principe is the smallest
independent state in Africa and is located in the Gulf of Guinea
in the South Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Central Africa. The
country is comprised of the main islands of Sao Tome, Principe
and surrounding islets. The capital is the city of Sao Tome on
the island of Sao Tome and the capital of the island of Principe
is Santo Antonio. A plantation colony, it was one of the first
territories colonized by the Portuguese in the 16th century.
