  1. Can I use my own data in the SAMMEC application?
The Smoking-Attributable Mortality, Morbidity, and Economic Costs (SAMMEC) software application allows users to edit all data elements on both the Adult and Maternal and Child Health programs except the relative risks of death from smoking. You can use different data (e.g., more current) than those included in the applications. Information on managing data elements is available by choosing "Help" from the contents menu on the SAMMEC home page.

Additional information on data included in the application, as well as computation methods and data updates, can be found in the Methodology and Latest Updates sections of the SAMMEC Web site.

Although no fees are required to use SAMMEC, you will need to register and choose a user ID and password. Additional information about the features of the SAMMEC application, data security, and steps involved in registering and using the software is found in the Frequently Asked Questions section.

  2. What are the main functions of SAMMEC?
The Smoking-Attributable Mortality, Morbidity, and Economic Costs (SAMMEC) software program is used to estimate the disease impact of smoking for the nation, individual states, and other large populations. SAMMEC is not a surveillance tool, and it is not designed to assess the effectiveness of an intervention to reduce tobacco use. The software does allow users to estimate the overall disease impact of smoking in a population.

The SAMMEC application on CDC Smoking & Tobacco Use Web site contains two computational programs:

    (1) The Adult SAMMEC component gives users the ability to estimate the number of annual deaths, years of potential life lost, medical expenditures, and productivity losses among adults due to smoking.

    (2) The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) SAMMEC component can be used to calculate smoking-attributable infant deaths and excess neonatal health care costs.

Although no fees are required to use SAMMEC, you will need to register and choose a user ID and password.
