Bahrain is an island country in the Arabian Gulf in southwest
Asia. Bahrain has about the same area as Chicago. Bahrain has
been a major center area of trade and communications in the Arabian
Gulf region for many centuries. The country remained underdeveloped
until the discovery of oil in 1932. Today, the nation has one
of the highest standards of living in the Gulf area. Manamah
is the capital, largest city, and chief commercial center. Bahrain
is headed by king. The king appoints a Council of Ministers that
actually runs the government. The Council consists of 12 members
plus prime minister who heads the group. Arabs make up about
ninety percent of the population. About all the people are Muslims,
and Islam is the national religion. Bahraini government has broadened
the economy by developing commerce in the Gulf region.
