“Human trafficking — the use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel the labor or services of another person — can take many forms. It can involve women who are compelled to work as domestic servants, men who are not allowed to leave a work site, children who are forced to perform sexual services, or immigrants promised a good job but who are compelled to work a different job for little or no money when they arrive in the U.S. What makes these crimes so difficult to uncover is the criminal’s determination to hide the victim to make sure their “property” does not stop working for them. Together we can help these victims of modern-day slavery and stop human trafficking. That is why my office brought together law enforcement, prosecutors, and victim service providers to create the Northern Iowa Human Trafficking Response Team. As part of this effort the Human Trafficking Awareness campaign was launched on April 8, 2008. Together we stand committed to do everything we can to help victims of this horrible crime and to bring the criminals to justice.”
