4. How common are problems with our sense of smell?

Roughly 24.5 percent (15 million) of Americans 55 years old or older have a smell problem. Thirty percent of older Americans between the ages of 70 and 80 have a problem with their sense of smell. Nearly two out of three people over the age of 80 have a problem with their sense of smell, with men affected more often than women.
