Windows Vista Compatibility with CAMEO, ALOHA, and MARPLOT

The development team is currently testing the CAMEO programs on the Windows Vista operating system. Initial results indicate that the programs will run in Vista, although some potential issues have already been identified:

  • Installing CAMEO, ALOHA, or MARPLOT in the Program Files folder is not recommended for two reasons: 1) it may make it difficult to backup your files properly, and 2) if multiple users access the program from the same computer, you will only be able to see the changes that you have made to the program.
  • The on-screen help in ALOHA and MARPLOT will not work in Vista unless you download a program (WinHlp32.exe) from Microsoft. Follow the instructions below to resolve this problem.

The development team hopes to complete the testing soon and additional instructions will be posted. You may also want to sign up for the CAMEO News Service to receive important information about the CAMEO products from the development team.

Getting ALOHA and MARPLOT help to run in Vista

The on-screen help in ALOHA and MARPLOT requires the WinHlp32.exe file to open them. This program was previously included as part of Microsoft’s operating systems, but it is not included in Vista. When you try to open either an ALOHA or a MARPLOT help window in Vista, you will see a note explaining the situation and directing you to a Microsoft support page.

Alternatively, you can follow the instructions below to download the file directly.

Note: We’ve had some trouble trying to validate the operating system using a Firefox browser, so you may need to use an Internet Explorer browser.

  1. Go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=82148. Note: You can’t see the download files until you validate your operating system.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to validate your operating system, which may involve downloading and installing a plugin.
  3. Return to the download page. The page should now show the download files that were hidden before.
  4. Download and install the file that is appropriate for your system. For most users this will be the file called Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu. If you download the wrong file, you will see an error message during the installation process telling you that this file does not apply to your system.
  5. Once you have installed the correct file, the ALOHA and MARPLOT helps will work again.
