  1. Where can tobacco advocates find resources to help them plan and conduct successful activities?

  2. How can I get involved in tobacco control advocacy?

  1. Where can tobacco advocates find resources to help them plan and conduct successful activities?
One of the ways that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) supports achievement of the Healthy People 2010 tobacco prevention objectives is by providing data, information, and other resources to tobacco coalitions and community groups that are working to enact smoke-free air laws. CDC also directs interested individuals and groups to other agencies and organizations that provide resources and assistance to tobacco control advocates.

The CDC Smoking & Tobacco Use Web site offers numerous resources for program planning, including:

    ▪ Resources and publications about

    - Preventing tobacco use among youth
    - Promoting smoking cessation among youth and adults
    - Health effects of tobacco use
    - Health effects of exposure to secondhand smoke
    - Smokefree indoor air policies

    ▪ State Tobacco Activities Tracking and Evaluation (STATE) System, which provides up-to-date and historical state-level data that might be helpful in planning a campaign to educate the community about the need for smoke-free air laws or to enact such laws.

    ▪ Links to other federal agencies and reputable organizations that provide useful information and tools.

  2. How can I get involved in tobacco control advocacy?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is not directly involved in tobacco control advocacy, i.e., CDC does not recruit volunteers or conduct public advocacy activities. To support national, state, and local activities, CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health (OSH) provides data, information, and other resources to CDC’s national partners, state tobacco coalitions, and community-based organizations. OSH also directs interested individuals to organizations that use volunteers and recruit other forms of public support for activities related to tobacco control.

Most states have tobacco coalitions or advocacy groups that welcome community participation. To find our about groups in your area, you can contact the tobacco control program at your state health department. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Web site lists URLs of state health agencies.

Many national organizations also provide opportunities for participation in advocacy of tobacco prevention. For some organizations you might want to contact, check "Other U.S. Organizations" under "Related Links" in the Basic Information section of the Smoking & Tobacco Use Web site.
