Image Number D994-2

At the hop breeding facility in Corvallis, Oregon, ARS geneticist John Henning (foreground) and Oregon State University research associate Shaun Townsend evaluate hop plants for lupulin glands, which produce beta acids that influence the aroma of hops. These scientists are also testing a new management technique that could save producers as much as 30 percent in labor costs by allowing growers to raise hops on lower trellises (just 10 feet high rather than the normal 18 feet).
