Now in its seventh year, ABRCMS is the largest, professional conference for biomedical students attracting approximately 2,600 individuals, including 1,650 undergraduate students, 280 graduate students, 30 postdoctoral scientists and 750 faculty and administrators. Students come from over 285 U.S. colleges and universities. All are pursuing advanced training in the biomedical sciences, and many have conducted independent research. The conference is designed to encourage underrepresented minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences and provide faculty mentors and advisors with resources for facilitating students’ success. More than 280 representatives from graduate programs at US colleges and universities as well as scientists from government agencies, foundations, and professional scientific societies join ABRCMS in the exhibitors program to share information about graduate school and summer internship opportunities. These representatives present research opportunities, funding sources, and professional networks. During the three-day conference, 1,000 students participate in poster and oral presentations in nine sub disciplines in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. All undergraduate student presentations are judged and those receiving the highest scores in each scientific discipline and in each educational level will be given an award during the final banquet. The conference has garnered the attention of the Black Issues in Higher Education magazine, Black Collegian magazine, Hispanic Magazine online, Dallas Fox News, New Orleans Times Picayune, Discovery Channel Canada, WWVL TV Channel 6 ABC New Orleans, FOX8 New Orleans, San Diego Union Tribune, San Diego Monitor, and San Diego Fox 6 Morning News Show. Some of our past speakers include The Honorable Louis Stokes, former US Congressman; Nobel Laureates Thomas Cech and Alfred Gilman; Benjamin Carson, Johns Hopkins University; Marilyn Hughes-Gaston, former US Assistant Surgeon General; John Ruffin, National Center for Minority Health Disparities; Shirley Ann Jackson, president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Jeremy Berg, National Institute of General Medical Sciences; Roderic Pettigrew, National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering; Norman Anderson, American Psychological Association; Shirley Malcom, American Association for the Advancement of Sciences; Freeman Hrabowski III, president, UMBC; Mina Bissell, Lawrence Berkley Laboratories; Kenneth Wesson, neuroscience consultant; and Treena Livingston Arinzeh, (2003 Presidential Early Career Awardee), New Jersey Institute of Technology. Formerly known as the MARC/MBRS Symposium, this conference is sponsored by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), Division of Minority Opportunities in Research Program (MORE) and managed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). ABRCMS serves as a key stepping stone enhancing the scientific and professional development of young scientists. After participating in ABRCMS, all students are strongly encouraged to attend professional society meetings of their respective disciplines to continue their scientific and professional development.
