Summer begins today, June 20th, 2008 at 559 pm MDT

Today, June 20th, Summer will begin across the northern hemisphere.  It will officially begin at 5:59 PM MDT.  That will mark the time that the the northern hemisphere will be tilted toward the Sun it’s maximum amount during the year.  At that time the Sun will appear to be directly overhead at about 23 1/2 degrees north latitude.   It also marks the longest day across the northern hemisphere, with "day" in this case being defined as the longest period of time between sunrise and sunset.  After June 20th the "days" will begin to shrink, very slowly at first but at an increasing rate as Fall approaches.

At the same time, today will begin the season of Winter across the southern hemisphere.
