Upcoming Lunar Eclipse on March 3rd

This Saturday, March 3rd, a total Lunar eclipse will occur.  A lunar eclipse is when the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth as the Moon revolves around the Earth.  Unfortunately for viewers in this part of the country, including Cheyenne, only the end portion of the eclipse will be visible.

For Cheyenne, the partial phase of the eclipse will be almost over when the Moon rises Saturday evening.  Moonrise will be at 5:52 PM, with the end of the partial eclipse about 19 minutes thereafter, at 6:11 and 28 seconds.  Still, if clouds do not hinder the view, you should see a small patch of darkness on the edge of the Moon when it rises.  Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is safe to view with the naked eye.  The further east you are, the more eclipse will be visible.  For example, moonrise
Saturday in Alliance will be at 5:43 P.M. MDT,  thus about 9 more minutes of the waning partial eclipse will be visible there.

The next total lunar eclipse, which will be visible in its near entirety from most of the United States, will occur in the early morning hours before sunrise on August 28th.  The total eclipse phase will occur from 3:52 A.M to 5:22 A.M. MDT that morning.
