A recap of the record-breaking cold temperatures on February 17-18

Unusually cold temperatures interrupted what had been a very mild winter across southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska. Arctic high pressure invaded the region on the evening of February 16th, and several records were broken over the next few days.

Temperature dropped fast after sunset on the 17th and some record lows were broken before midnight.

Temperatures got even colder during the early morning hours of the 18th, shattering more records.

The -36 reading at Alliance was the 5th coldest temperature recorded there since 1894 and the coldest since December 23, 1989.

The -33 reading at Chadron was the 4th coldest temperature recorded there since 1894 and the coldest since December 22, 1990.
