Media and Communications : Virgin Islands (U S)

A listing of web sites that provide links to resources relating to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Within the Library of Congress, the Newspaper & Current Periodical Reading Room has an online search facility to discern what newspapers are available for consultation in that reading room: http://www.loc.gov/rr/news/fncr.html. The most important source for bibliography of books and articles concerning the U.S. Virgin Islands is the annual Handbook of Latin American Studies (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/) produced by over 130 contributing editors under the editorship of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. Additional coverage of journal articles can be found through a subscription to the Hispanic American Periodical Index (http://hapi.gseis.ucla.edu/).   Both the Handbook and HAPI are available in selected libraries in book form.   One of the major aggregators for links to a wide variety of the U.S. Virgin Islands subjects is the University of Texas' LANIC (http://www.lanic.utexas.edu/la/cb/other/vi/).

The only independent newspaper serving the people of the Virgin Islands. This Pulitzer prize winning newspaper has an office on St. Thomas and a St. Croix Bureau. The newspaper is distributed throughout the three U.S. Virgin Islands and online.

Local radio station on St. Croix - 1290 AM. Located on St. Croix in the Eastern Caribbean, WRRA serves a diverse audience of contrasting cultural roots. St. Croix, under seven flags since it's discovery by Columbus on his second voyage 1493, has a rich history reflected in the islands radio style of WRRA. It contains a blend of European old world architecture charm, pulsating West African rhythms, U.S. mainland political dynamic, and Hispanic machismo all play a part in defining St. Croix diversity. Showcases a wide variety of entertainment blended into a presentation of Blues, Jazz, Calypso, Country, Gospel, Latin, and Pop. WRRA radio reaches an audience of nearly a million people in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Eastern Puerto Rico, as well as St. Kitts, Nevis, Statia and Saba.

WSTA THE LUCKY 13 1340 AM RADIO STATION  (http://www.wsta.com/)
WSTA, LUCKY 13 radio station is the oldest radio station in the Virgin Islands and was the first news organization in the entire Caribbean region to post DAILY news to the web - since 1995. The station started as a "get away from it all" retirement hobby for William N. Greer who had wired most of the radio stations in Puerto Rico. In 1950, Greer decided to start his own radio station after retiring to St. Thomas. 1984, Addie Ottley, under the company name Ottley Communications Corporation, bought the station, boosted its capability to 1000 watts of stereo power. Lucky 13 was able to remain the island's guiding force during Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Marilyn and again during Hurricane Lenny. WSTA is celebrated its jubilee year in 2000, as it reached 50 years of broadcasting
