A listing of web sites that provide links to resources relating to the U.S. Virgin Islands. The most important source for bibliography of books and articles concerning the U.S. Virgin Islands is the annual Handbook of Latin American Studies (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/hlas/) produced by over 130 contributing editors under the editorship of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. Additional coverage of journal articles can be found through a subscription to the Hispanic American Periodical Index (http://hapi.gseis.ucla.edu/).   Both the Handbook and HAPI are available in selected libraries in book form.   One of the major aggregators for links to a wide variety of the U.S. Virgin Islands subjects is the University of Texas' LANIC (http://www.lanic.utexas.edu/la/cb/other/vi/).

BRIEF HISTORY OF ST. CROIX  (http://www.stcroixthisweek.com/)
Carib Indians inhabited the island 900 AD and called the islands AyAy. Arawak indians also inhabited the island. In 1493, Christopher Columbus landed at Salt River on his second voyage to the new world. Seven flags have flown over the island — those of Spain, England, Holland, France, Knights of Malta, Denmark and the United States.

The Danish West Indies consisted of the Caribbean islands St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. In 1917, the colony was sold to the United States and has since been known as the United States Virgin Islands. This site provides information about the Danish West Indies literature, survey of the Archives and provides "finding aids" and "Search" facilities. Most of the records for the pre-1917 Danish West Indies history are housed in the Danish National Archives, Copenhagen, Denmark. Sites that the first signs of emigration from County Cavan Ireland to the Danish West Indies appeared in the mid 1700's. many of the Irish who came to St. Croix were actually descendants of the English and Scottish tenants who had come to Ireland during the Resettlement. Lists names and information of many Irish crucians who worked as accountants, bookkeepers, overseers, and managers on sugar estates. Some acquired estates of their own.

MIDDLE PASSAGE   (http://www.middlepassage.org/)
The Middle Passage Monument Project provided a symbolic water burial to pay tribute to the millions of African people who died en route to and at the hands of slavery between the 15th and 19th centuries. The Site's location is 427 Kilometers off New York's Harbor, into the international waters of the Passage. Six (6) replicas of the monument will be created for placement on land in Africa, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, North America, and South America between the years 2000 and 2006. The on-land monuments will feature a cubism-inspired, 50-foot arch made of stainless steel. The two-part overlapping arched monument symbolizes the need for the past, present, and future to converge in order for cultural identity and pride to be realized. A 100-foot, granite walkway, each foot representing an estimated million African people who perished during the transatlantic slave trade, will be inscribed with the history of Africa and the Diaspora, ancient and modern, hieroglyphics, symbols, significant dates, events, names, and places.

Describes the many ways slaves on the Virgin Islands resisted enslavement and the many revolts that occurred on St. Croix. Lists the dates of some slave revolts in the Caribbean.
