In 2003, 13% of all hospital discharges were for heart disease, one of the leading causes
of hospitalization. Of these, 24% were for congestive heart failure, 23% for
coronary atherosclerosis,18% for cardiac dysrhythmias, 17% for acute myocardial infarction, and 17%
for other heart diseases (e.g., valve disorders and hypertensive heart disease).
