EPA's Goal for 'Healthy Communities and Ecosystems'
"Protect, sustain, or restore the health of people, communities, and ecosystems using integrated and comprehensive approaches and partnerships."

Human Health Research - EPA's mission is to protect human health and safeguard the natural environment. To accomplish its mission, EPA must have the ability to assess accurately and manage effectively the potential risks associated with environmental pollutants. ORD's Human Health Research Program (HHRP) performs core research to improve human health risk assessment-risk management processes at EPA. The program goal is to provide broadly applicable scientific information and tools for use by all Agency programs that consider health risk in policy decisions. The main objective of the HHRP is to reduce uncertainties in the extrapolations necessary for the risk assessment process. ORD's HHRP is described more fully in a multi-year plan: Human Health Research Plan MYP.

NERL's Human Health Research Program is an integral part of ORD's. ORD has four long term goals, and NERL's program is designed to help ORD achieve two of them: (1) improve understanding of cumulative risks posed by aggregate exposures to multiple agents or stressors; and (2) provide the scientific basis for protecting susceptible subpopulations in the risk assessment process.
