Endocrine Disruptors Research

EPA's Goal for 'Healthy Communities and Ecosystems'
"Protect, sustain, or restore the health of people, communities, and ecosystems using integrated and comprehensive approaches and partnerships."

EPA's mission is to protect human health and safeguard the natural environment. To accomplish its mission, EPA must have the ability to assess accurately and manage effectively the potential risks associated with environmental pollutants. Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous chemicals that interfere with the function of endocrine systems. EDCs may interfere with the production, release, transport, metabolism, binding, action, or elimination of the natural hormones in the body responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis and the regulation of developmental processes. ORD's Endocrine Disruptors Research Program (EDRP) program goal is to provide broadly applicable scientific information and tools to improve Agency decisions about assessment and management of risks posed by EDCs. ORD's Research Plan for Endocrine Disruptors (PDF, 77 pp, 988KB) provides the foundation for planning and conducting EDCs research. ORD's EDRP is described more fully in a multi-year plan: ORD EDC MYP. NERL's Endocrine Disruptors Research Program is an integral part of ORD's EDRP. ORD research is formulated along three long term goals, and NERL's program is designed to help ORD achieve one of these goals: LTG 1: Provide a Better Understanding of the Science Underlying the Effects, Exposure, Assessment, and Management of Endocrine Disruptors.
