Virginia
Background: The West Virginia Department of Health and Human
Resources was funded as an enhanced research project from 2003-2008. In
2008, West Virginia became a standard project.
Lifestyle Intervention: West Virginia developed Cookin’ Up
Health, a culturally and individually tailored computer-based
interactive nutrition program, and a tailored print-based health
communications program to reinforce nutrition behavior and offer
staged-based education for physical activity. Six print-based health
messages will be mailed to participants throughout the year to help
women adopt and maintain behavior change.
Screening: Risk factor screening includes blood pressure, glucose,
cholesterol and other lipids testing as well as assessing weight,
medical history, tobacco use, poor diet, and physical inactivity.
Sites: 35 primary care centers and local health departments,
serving 22 counties.
