  • August 1 to October 31:

    "Ready. Set. Sit!"
Last year, some two dozen national wildlife refuges participated in The Big Sit! We're hoping for even more participation in this year's event, scheduled for Sunday, October 12, to help kick-off National Wildlife Refuge Week. The rules for Big Sit! could not be easier; refuge volunteers, Friends and/or local birders sit in a 17-foot diameter circle and identify all the birds they see or hear during a 24-hour (or less) period. If you're not sure about participating, or need ideas for a team name, check out the Captains Notes from last year at: http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/funbirds/bigsit/results07/captains_notes.php

Later this summer, you'll receive activity ideas in your National Wildlife Refuge Week toolkit. You can register your Big Sit! viewing circle at: http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/funbirds/bigsit/bigsit.aspx. Don't forget to indicate that the "sitting" will take place on a national wildlife refuge. For more information contact Maggie O'Connell.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Teams with Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology to Support Bird Watching

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology on February 20, 2008 outlining efforts to work together to promote birding, habitat conservation and citizen science to a broad audience across the country. The Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology leads the nation in involving the public in bird watching, science, and conservation.

The partnership with the Cornell Lab is yet another step forward in the Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System Birding Initiative. The initiative was launched by Service Director H. Dale Hall in 2006 to raise awareness among birders of opportunities and conservation programs on units of the National Wildlife Refuge System and help them fully appreciate the importance of refuges in the lives of their favorite wildlife.
