STEVENS COSPONSORS INDECENCY LEGISLATION
Measure Would Protect FCC’s Role as Guardian of the Nation’s Airwaves
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Vice Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, joined Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) yesterday to cosponsor the “Protecting Children from Indecent Programming Act” (S. 1780).  The legislation was introduced by Senators John D. Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) and Mark Pryor (D-Ark.) and would require the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to maintain a policy that the broadcast of a single word or image may be considered indecent.

“It is my hope the Commerce Committee will swiftly approve this bill and that we can work with the House to do the same,’” said Senator Stevens.  “It is important for the FCC to be able to continue to protect the American public from indecency on the radio and broadcast television.”

Specifically, this legislation will allow the FCC to establish that a single word or image in a given context may be considered indecent and may levy fines against the broadcaster.
