Summary of Criminal Prosecutions

The Summary of Criminal Prosecutions resulting from environmental investigations provides information to the public and regulated community on concluded criminal enforcement cases, by the U.S. Government's Fiscal Year (October to September). The Summary will be updated regularly.

For information on significant criminal case milestones for recent cases, see Criminal Case Activities .

Although the individual summaries provide information about major elements of the case (e.g., the nature of the violations and the resolution of the prosecution), they do not attempt to comprehensively describe every aspect of the case and additional updates/corrections to previous years may continue. Therefore, anyone interested in an individual case should review the summary in conjunction with the official case documents on file in the respective U.S. District Court where the case was adjudicated. We recommend that you occasionally recheck prior years for additional updates. This document is not guaranteed to contain all cases investigated/prosecuted by EPA's Criminal Program.

The Summary of Criminal Prosecutions results are provided in a searchable database. The search fields were established based on prior requests for information. You may go directly to Search the Summary or first review the search terms below and learn how you can customize your search.

Fiscal Year (FY):

The Federal Government operates on a year that runs from October 1 through September 30. Each fiscal year is numbered according to the calendar year in which it ends. As an example, FY 2002 ran from October 1, 2001 to September 30, 2002, so if you are looking for a case in which the defendants were sentenced in November 2000, you would enter 2001 in the Fiscal Year search term.

District:

The United States district courts are the trial courts of the federal court system. There are 94 federal judicial districts, including at least one district in each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Three territories of the United States -- the Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands -- have district courts that hear federal cases. States may have more than one district, these districts are broken down by geographic location. In addition to the District, whose abbreviation is D., a state may have an Eastern District, E.D.; a Western District, W.D.; a Northern District, N.D.; a Southern District, S.D.; or a Central District, C.D.. If you wish to locate the appropriate district court for your area, please review the U.S. District Courts' listing.
