Monthly Hydrographic Surveys of Biscayne Bay and Florida Bay

Monthly surveys are conducted to study the hydrography and water quality of both Biscayne Bay and Florida Bay. These surveys are conducted aboard the R/V Virginia K, and utilize an underway flow-through system equipped with a Seabird model 21 thermosalinograph, a Seapoint chlorophyll fluorometer, a Seapoint ultraviolet fluorometer, and a Wetlabs transmissometer to collect data while the ship is underway. The underway measurements include temperature, salinity, percent light transmission at l=660nm, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and CDOM fluorescence. This data is collected at seven-second intervals and is stamped with the time and GPS position of the measurement. In addition to the underway measurements, there are 16 discrete sampling stations in Biscayne Bay and 40 discrete sampling stations in Florida Bay. These stations are used to calibrate the underway instrumentation, enabling the underway fluorometer recordings to be converted to chlorophyll a concentration values. The result is a quickly produced, high spatial resolution “snapshot” of the temperature, salinity, and water quality parameters for both Bays during each survey.

SEAKEYS Reports

The Sustained Ecological Research Related to Management of the Florida Keys Seascape (CMAN/SEAKEYS) marine environmental monitoring stations provide near real-time in situ hourly measurements for many meteorological and oceanographic parameters including wind speed, wind direction, wind gusts, air temperature, barometric pressure, sea temperature, salinity, UV-B, photosynthetically active radiation, tide, fluorometry and transmissometry. These data are screened by a suite of expert systems to support data quality review, and to model and predict biological events, such as coral bleaching, near coral reef areas.
