Annual Results - FY2003

FY2004 Annual Results Topics

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released compliance assurance and enforcement results data for Fiscal Year 2003 that showed environmental benefits increased an estimated 131 percent. Estimated pollutants reduced, treated, or properly managed totaled approximately 600 million pounds, compared to 260 million in FY2002.

In addition to estimating the pounds of pollutants to be reduced, treated or properly managed (approximately 600 million) and pounds of contaminated soil to be treated (7.5 billion) as it has in previous years, EPA now estimates gallons of contaminated groundwater to be treated (6.5 billion), acres of wetlands that will be restored (1,050), and the number of people served by drinking water systems that will be brought into compliance (2 million) as a result of EPA enforcement activity. The Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (OECA) collected data on estimated pollutant reductions to groundwater, wetlands and drinking water for the first time last year.
