Fee allows entrance to the Monument for seven (&) consecutive days - beginning with the original date of entrance.

Details

Entrance fees are waived at Effigy Mounds National Monument - November through March each year.

  • The entrance fee is $3.00 per person over the age of 15, with a maximum charge of $5.00 for all occupants of a private, non-commercial vehicle.
  • There are no set commercial vehicle fees; tour groups arriving in commercial vehicles by the individual passengers in the vehicle ($3.00 per person).
  • The entrance fee is waived for those with an Effigy Mounds National Monument Annual Pass or a Federal Recreational Lands Pass which are The America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual, Senior, Access, and Volunteer Passes, click on the link above for more information. Older passes (including the Annual National Parks Pass and Golden Eagle, Golden Age, and Golden Access Passports) will still be honored. 

Federal Recreational Lands Passes

Starting January 1, 2007, the America the Beautiful-Federal Recreational Lands Passes replaced the Golden Age, Golden Access, Golden Eagle, and National Parks Passes. The new passes are on sale at the Visitor Center.

All Golden Age, Golden Access, Golden Eagle, and National Parks Passes will continue to be honored according to the provisions of the pass. Only paper Golden Age and Access Passports may be exchanged free of charge for the new passes.

Entrance Fee Waiver

Entrance to the Monument is free for organized groups visiting on an officially sanctioned activity from a formal accredited educational institution.

Reservations

Reservations for public tours and programs are occasionally required. Please reference our schedule of events and special events pages.

* Camping is not available within the Monument; however, there are numerous camping resources in the local area.

Reserved Group Tours & Fees

There is a special fee of $30.00 per group (maximum of 30 students) for reserved ranger conducted programs. The group size restrictions are based on practical limitations imposed by hiking the Monument's trails. One ranger is assigned for each group of 30 students; adults accompanying the group are not included in the 30 person limit.

Reservations are taken year-round for programs presented in late April, May, September and October. A history of groups returning each year and limitations of ranger availability usually require reservations made well in advance.

* Seasonal Ranger Staff are available on a regular basis each year from May through mid-October. Reserved tours in late April and late October are limited to intermittent ranger availability.

Did You Know?
An important figure in the documentation of Iowa's effigy mounds was Ellison Orr. Born in 1857, Orr worked other jobs while pursuing research in archeology. After retiring at the age of 73, Orr began a career as an archeologist spending the next 20 years conducting surveys and excavations.
