Student Employment Program

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM:

The Student Employment Program provides Federal employment opportunities to students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree seeking students taking at least a half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited high school, technical, vocational, 2 or 4 year college or university, graduate or professional school.

The Tax Division employs approximately 10 students through the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). To apply for a student position with the Tax Division, you must submit a resume which includes a description of your work experience, the dates (month and year) of previous and current employment, the status of your school enrollment, your social security number and whether you can work full-time or part-time.

BENEFITS:

Annual (Vacation) and Sick Leave:

Students are eligible to earn annual and sick leave.

Health and Life Insurance:

Students in the Student Temporary Employment Program are considered temporary employees and are generally not entitled to these benefits. However, once students have been continuously employed for a year without a break in service exceeding 5 days, they may enroll in the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program, paying 100% of the premium (i.e., both the employee and government share).

Retirement Coverage:

Students in the STEP are generally ineligible for retirement coverage.

Student Work Schedules:

You can work a variety of schedules. You and your supervisor will work together to determine your schedule based on your academic needs and the work needs of the office.

Salary:

Typically, the Tax Division hires students at the GS-1 thru GS-4 grade levels. Salaries will be determined by your level of education. In the Washington, DC area, these grade levels earn from $17,152 - $23,744 annually.
