GENERAL INFORMATION

Literacy*AmeriCorps is a national service initiative to strengthen and improve communities nationwide. Currently, Literacy*AmeriCorps has programs operating in four locations: Houston, Texas; Palm Beach County, Florida; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Seattle, Washington.

Through a partnership with the Corporation for National Service and local literacy organizations, members of this "domestic Peace Corps" have been improving literacy skills in their communities since September 1994.

The program is funded through the Corporation for National Service, and it requires a significant local match of both cash and in-kind donations.

In return for this public/private investment, Literacy*AmeriCorps members serve full time for one year, leveraging resources and enabling local literacy providers to improve the services they offer. Services provided by members range from tutoring and teaching to mobilizing volunteers and mentoring students.
