LIEBERMAN APPLAUDS LAUNCH OF HOMELAND SECURITY ACADEMY

WASHINGTON – Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., Wednesday applauded the opening of the DHS Homeland Security Academy, which will provide graduate education opportunities for federal, state, local and military officials in areas related to homeland security.

The Academy, which opened on June 6, 2007, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., is an expansion of the Naval Postgraduate School's Center for Homeland Defense and Security. Advocated by Sen. Lieberman since the start up of the Department of Homeland Security, the academy was authorized by legislation drafted last year by Lieberman, which became part of the FY 2007 DHS Appropriations Bill.

“Protecting our homeland security poses a complex challenge for the nation. The employees of the Department of Homeland Security must have a complete understanding of the overall strategy, goals, methods and techniques for carrying out their jobs effectively,” Lieberman said. “The Homeland Security Academy will provide government employees access to continuing education and hands-on training exercises that are unique to DHS, and are essential to keeping America safe.”
