Senate Passes Stevens Resolution Condemning Harmful Foreign Fishing Practices

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A Senate Resolution condemning harmful foreign fishing subsidies introduced by Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Vice Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, unanimously passed the Senate last night.  The Resolution is cosponsored by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Senators Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), John Sununu (R-N.H.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.), Susan Collins (R-Maine) Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), David Vitter (R-La.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.).  Senator Stevens noted that the problems caused by these subsidies affect not only global fisheries resources, but also the coastal communities which depend on them.

“This resolution sends a strong message to world leaders: the overexploitation of global fisheries resources must end,” said Senator Stevens.  “It is deeply troubling that many countries continue to subsidize their industrial fishing fleets, thereby enabling them to pillage fish stocks on the high seas.  These practices harm the environment and threaten the livelihoods of American fishermen, who act according to management practices designed to ensure the sustainability of our fisheries.”

For more than 30 years, U.S. fisheries have been scientifically managed and sustained through a framework established by the Magnuson-Stevens Act.  This Act, which was reauthorized in January 2007, now includes amendments to prevent overfishing and provide managers with the tools they need to limit entry and prevent overcapitalization.
