Senator Stevens Pleased to See DOT Moving Forward on Increasing Fuel Economy
Stevens Introduced 1st Bill to Increase Fuel Economy Standards during 110th Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), Vice Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee said he was pleased to learn that the Department of Transportation was moving forward to increase fuel economy for cars and light trucks.  This historic action will raise fuel economy standards for the first time since 1975 and was included as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA), which passed the Senate last December.  On January 4, 2007, Senator Stevens introduced the first legislation (S.183) in the 110th Congress to increase fuel economy for cars and light trucks and was instrumental in negotiating the final bipartisan agreement as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA).

“I am pleased to learn that the Secretary is moving forward to implement this historic piece of legislation because conservation, domestic production, and the development of alternative sources of energy are all part of our nation’s energy solution,” said Senator Stevens.  “Not only will increasing fuel economy standards limit our nation’s dependence on foreign oil, it will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide savings at the gas pump.”
