The Regional Earth Science Applications Center (RESAC) was established in 1999 by NASA as a consortium of universities, state and federal natural resource management agencies, and industry partners charged with developing satellite remote sensing products, geospatial analysis methods, and biophysical process models to meet regional decision making needs. The Upper Midwest RESAC (or the Center) was established as a project of three Land Grant Universities in the Upper Midwest region: University of Minnesota , University of Wisconsin-Madison , and Michigan State University .
Not unlike the familiar National Weather Service, the researchers at the Center report regional forecasts, local trends, and conditions. They use new information from earth satellites to monitor components of the environment other than weather, and provide that information directly to planners, decision makers, and citizens to improve planning at all levels. Center research is focused in five areas - agriculture , forestry , land use , water , and data .
This three-state partnership was active from 1999 – 2003 and this website is a collection of their results, many of which are ongoing. Please feel free to contact the individual researchers associated with each area for information on their current developments.
