Research Project: RESEARCH IN SOUTH AFRICA TO ACCELERATE DEVELOPMENT OF BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENTS FOR CAPE IVY

Location: Exotic and Invasive Weeds Research

Project Number: 5325-22000-020-10
Project Type: Specific C/A

Start Date: Apr 18, 2003
End Date: Apr 17, 2008

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is to accelerate development of potential biological control agents for Cape ivy, Delairea odorata, and other weeds of South African origin. Cape ivy is a vine, native to South Africa, that has become a serious pest in environmentally sensitive areas of California and Hawaii. Research into the biology, ecology, and initial screening of host range of potential agents for Cape ivy can most easily be performed under non-containment conditions in South Africa, thereby assuring that the final screening of agents at the ARS quarantine in Albany, California is efficient and effective. This Agreement replaces SCA No. 58-5325-8-033F.

Approach:
Based on prior surveys and research [Agreement # 58-5325-8-033], the ADODR and the Cooperator have prioritized candidate insects and pathogens in South Africa that require research to confirm their potential for controling Cape ivy. The proposed additional research in South Africa will concentrate on determining the host range, biology and ecology of these priority candidates. If the research in South Africa confirms that the candidates are safe and have potential for controlling the target weed, they will be shipped to the ARS quarantine in Albany, California for final screening by the ADODR. Documents SCA with S. African Research Council. Formerly 5325-22000-017-23S (6/05).
