Information Technology Management

Overview

The purpose of the Information Technology (IT) management function within the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is to establish accountability for IT management in the Department of Labor (DOL) and to implement an IT Investment Management process for selecting, controlling, and evaluating IT investments. The Clinger Cohen Act of 1996 calls for executive branch agencies, such as DOL, to designate a Chief Information Officer who has overall responsibility for this management function.

The Department established a multi-phased, multi-year approach to implementing an IT investment management process. This approach seeks to minimize risks associated with IT investments and to ensure that those investments improve mission performance, and, therefore, service delivery to the Department's customers.

The DOL OCIO maintains a team of specialists in IT investment management and enterprise architecture who oversee the Department's responsibilities for:

DOL has a management framework that encompasses the entire system life cycle-beginning with a potential project's initial concept and continuing until its useful life is fully completed.
