Policies

This section contains specific policies that impact health promotion at federal workplaces. “Policies” discussed in this Web site are formal laws, regulations, and rules that have been adopted on a collective basis to guide individual and collective behavior at the federal workplace. They may be voluntary or legally binding. Policy 101 provides basic information about policies and explains why they are important to workforce health promotion (WHP) planners. Workplaces that are not federal agencies can use this information to generate ideas about how policies impact health promotion in your organization.


Overview of Federal Agency Policies

Following are specific policies that may impact health promotion at federal workplaces and can be used as a baseline needs assessment to inform program planning and evaluation. Check back for more content in the future.

CDC Policies

The following are examples of policies that have been established at CDC for CDC employees. WHP planners can use these as examples when developing policies for their own workplace.

Alternative Work SchedulesPDF file (PDF-289k)
Allows CDC employees to vary daily arrival/departure times within a flexible band of time and extend lunch periods up to and additional 1½ hours. This time can be used to exercise and to carpool.

Provides guidance for making available healthful food choices at CDC sponsored or co-sponsored meetings, conferences, and other work related events where light food and beverage will be served.

Fare Share Program (Public Transportation Subsidies)PDF file (PDF-213k)
Allows CDC employees to be reimbursed for a portion of expenses incurred for using public transportation as the primary means of commuting to their place of employment.

Lactation Support ProgramPDF file (PDF-261k)
Provides education and support to CDC employees who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Purchase and Use of Kitchen AppliancesPDF file (PDF-205k)
This CDC policy provides agency-wide direction and assistance on the acquisition and use of kitchen appliances with appropriated funds. CDC recognizes that the acquisition and use of certain kitchen appliances contributes to employee health and productivity and provides a safe work environment by ensuring that food is adequately refrigerated or heated to avoid contamination.

Tobacco-Free Campus PolicyPDF file (PDF-184k)
Provides guidelines for tobacco use at CDC work sites.
