1. Recent Technical Achievements at HRIBF.

The installation of the equipment on the 300 KV RIB Injector Platform has recently been completed. Vacuum testing of the various injector components is underway at the present time.

Test beams have been extracted from the ORNL Electron Beam Plasma Ion Source, which was constructed for the production of RIBs. The emitance of this source is presently being measured.

Sizeable beams (about 2 microAmps of 75-MeV alpha particle) have been extracted from ORIC using an internal ion source. This is the first demonstration of such operation in 20 years.

The 25-MV Tandem Accelerator is being outfitted with a resistor chain that will allow operation with both higher and lower terminal voltages.

The Oak Ridge Recoil Mass Spectrometer (RMS) has been delivered.

2. HRIBF Summer Program.

As announced in the previous news letter a three week Summer Program is planned at HRIBF July 11--29, 1994. The first two weeks, July 11--22, will concentrate on Nuclear Structure, and the focus of the last week, July 25--29, will be Nuclear Astrophysics. It is emphasised that this is intended NOT to be a workshop or a school. Instead a few distinguished speakers will be invited each week to present lectures on topics which may be important to the early experimental program of HRIBF. It is hoped that this will provide sufficient stimulation to encourage users to bring their postdocs and students with them to Oak Ridge. Since only a portion of the time will be devoted to lectures, there will be time for extended discussions with the speakers, as well as to plan early experiments.

The people who have agreed to "speak" and their tenative topics are given below:

Week of July 11 -- 15:
     Alan Goodman T = 0 (n--p) Pair Correlations
Erich Ormand Future Shell Model Calculations
Witek Nazarewicz Current & Future Nuclear Structure Models for
                               Drip Line Nuclei
Vladimir Zelevinsky Theoretical Description of Narrow Resonances

This week will start on Monday morning July 11 at 11:00 a.m. with a dedication of the new addition to the HRIBF, which will house the RMS, in the name of Russell Robinson.

Week of July 18 -- 22:
Alex Brown* Present Status of Shell Model Calculations in
                               Medium Mass Nuclei
     Paul-Henri Hennen+ Self-Consistent Nuclear Structure Calculations
                               for Exotic Nuclei
     Ramon Wyss Cranking Calculations for A = 80 & 110--140 Nuclei

Week of July 25 -- 29:
Karl-Heinz Langanke Nuclear Theory for Astrophysical Cross Sections
     Mark Leising@ Nova Models
Don Clayton# Observations with the Compton Gamma-Ray
                               Observatory (GRO)
Michael Howard The Orgin of Heavy Proton-rich and Neutron-rich
                               Nuclei

The local phone numbers and location of the principle hotels and motels in Oak Ridge are given below. We request that the participants make their own hotel arrangements. However, if you have problems Jody Heath (615-574 4113 or heath@orph01.phy.ornl.gov) may be able to provide some assistance.

         Garden Plaza Hotel (615) 481 2468 215 S. Illinois Ave.
         Comfort Inn (615) 481 8200 433 S. Rutgers Ave.
         Hampton Inn (615) 482 7889 208 S. Illinois Ave.
         Days Inn (615) 483 5615 206 S. Illinois Ave.

There also are a very few rooms available to users in the Joint Institute Guest House, which can be arranged through Ms. Heath.

PERSONS PLANNING TO ATTEND, WHO ARE NOT BADGED MEMBERS OF THE USERS GROUP, PLEASE INFORM JODY HEATH (615-574 4113 or heath@orph01.phy.ornl.gov) AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT PROPER CLEARANCE TO VISIT ORNL CAN BE OBTAINED. IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT THAT NON-BADGED, NON-U.S. CITIZENS PLANNING TO ATTEND CONTACT MS. HEATH IMMEDIATELY.

3. Dedication of "Robinson Hall."

On Monday morning July 11 at 11:00 at the beginning of the summer program there will be a short dedication ceremony for the new addition to the HRIBF, which will house the Recoil Mass Separator (RMS). This addition will be dedicated "Robinson Hall" in the name of Russell Robinson, who has contibuted so much to the Holifield Facility during its operation. One of Russell's most recent contributions was the coordination of the design and purchase of the RMS and the construction of the hall that will bear his name.
