Users are reminded of the August 25 deadline for letters of intent for the early scientific program at HRIBF. Ten copies of such letters should be sent to reach Jerry Garrett at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Mail Stop 6368, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-6368 by that date.
Summaries of early beams and experimental apparatus were provided with the second announcement of the recent HRIBF Workshop and are available on the World Wide Web (http://www.phy.ornl.gov).
2. Telephone Area Code Changed to 423
On September 19 the area code for East Tennessee (including the Oak Ridge and Knoxville areas) will change from 615 to 423. There will be a five month grace period when either area code can be used.
3. Personnel Changes
Paul Mantica of UNISOR has taken a tenure-track assistant professor appointment in the Department of Chemistry at Michigan State University. In addition to research, Paul maintained and operated the UNISOR separator. More recently, he was in charge of the installation and commissioning of the new recoil mass spectrometer (RMS). With the installation of the RMS essentially complete, the commissioning phase of the RMS will be lead by Dan Shapira and Carl Gross. We wish Paul much success in his new position.
4. Users Group Meeting at the DNP
The HRIBF Users Group will hold its annual meeting at the Division of Nuclear Physics Fall Meeting in Bloomington, Indiana. We will meet for one hour at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27 in the Oak Room (M012). This is an opportunity to hear about the progress we have made in developing radioactive ion beams and the status of the new experimental equipment.
