The Radioactive Ion Beam Injector


The RIB injector is a focal point of the HRIBF as it functions to actually produce the radioactive nuclei.  Thick target material is bombarded by intense light ion beams from the ORIC cyclotron creating radioactive nuclei which are ionized within a high temperature ion source, accelerated into a beam which is then subjected to high resolution isotope/isobar mass separation and finally injected into the tandem accelerator.  Production of useable intensities of RIBs generally requires the development of innovative target/ ion source techniques which are optimized for production of specific RIB species.  Click on each component in the above diagram for a more detailed explanation of this process and some recent RIB developments made at the HRIBF.  To see the physical layout of the facility click here.
