Jobseekers looking for professional and business services work may notice lots of opportunities. That’s because this industry had the highest seasonally adjusted job openings rate when measured on the last business day of March 2008, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The job openings rate is the number of job openings as a percentage of total employment plus job openings.

The numerous openings in professional and business services continue a pattern: This industry is among three that have consistently had the highest job openings rates since the series began in December 2000. (The other two are (1) education and health services and (2) accommodation and food services.)

The professional and business services industry includes advertising and public relations services, consulting services, and administrative support services. And the high number of job openings is probably the result of new job growth. BLS projects that through 2016, employment in this industry will increase by over 4 million jobs—more than in any other industry.

For more information about the job openings survey, write to the BLS Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, 2 Massachusetts Avenue NE., Suite 4840, Washington, DC 20212; call (202) 691–5870; or visit online, www.bls.gov/jlt.
