Patent Title: Method to Improve Pathogen Detection in Poultry

ADMINISTRATOR AND IMMEDIATE STAFFS

Docket Number: 11006
Serial Number: 11445091

Technology Description:

ARS researchers have developed a quick and easy extraction method to improve detection of antibodies, antigens, bacteria, and viruses.  The purpose of this technology is to obtain clear aqueous samples in a few steps that can be applied to a variety of diagnostic tests.  For example, this technique affords early, low cost detection of poultry diseases.  Antigens and antibodies are not diluted; therefore, this allows for more sensitive testing.  The advantages of this technology over existing technologies are quick extraction time (less than 30 minutes); clear, clean, concentrated or undiluted extract; high yield of extracted antigen or antibody; ability to use  extract in conventional tests and fluorescence polarization tests; no enrichment step, and inactivation of organisms such as Salmonella.  Existing technologies use harsh chemicals for extraction, purification methods that require numerous steps, and require more than three days for detection of Salmonella from eggs when serotyping is used.

Egg producer, poultry breeder, diagnostic, and vaccine companies could use this technology.  The animal health industry will also benefit from this information.
