Technology Description:   Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists in Texas have developed an invention that relates to a method and compositions of organophosphate (OP) insecticide and synergist mixtures to increase the efficacy of OPs for the control of flies and ticks.  The technology is based on the metabolic mechanisms involved in bioactivation of OPs in pest species.  The scientists have demonstrated that the toxicity of OPs to flies and ticks is significantly enhanced by the synergists.  The new OP-synergist formulations will provide effective tools for the control of arthropod pests affecting livestock, pets, and possibly humans.  The increased efficacy of synergized OPs is particularly valuable in controlling flies and ticks resistant to OPs and/or pyrethroids (synthetic materials of the natural pesticide pyrethrum), delaying resistance development, and eventually reducing pesticide use.  Chemical companies could use this invention to develop new pest control products.  It is also likely that USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program will adopt the new synergist-coumaphos formulations to eliminate OP-resistant ticks.                                                 Reference:   Please refer to USPN 7,192,905 (Docket #0210.02), “Organophosphate Insecticide Synergists for Fly and Tick Control,” which issued on March 20, 2007.  Foreign patent rights are not available.   Inventors:   Andrew Y.
