Portable "Freezing" Device

Technology Description:

ARS scientists have developed a portable multi-purpose cryogenic surface (MCS) device that will allow researchers more flexibility in working with biological specimens that need to remain frozen. The MCS device is an insulated, liquid nitrogen-cooled tray that maintains a working surface temperature of -185 to -196 degrees Celsius. Liquid nitrogen is poured into the reservoir, which contacts the underside of the stainless steel working surface. The surface will remain cool as long as liquid nitrogen levels are maintained. Samples collected in the field can be sorted for greater processing ease. The tray can be used for sorting, measuring, or processing biological materials in the field or on the laboratory bench. This portable tray could possibly be used in medical and other biochemical research facilities that need to work with samples that must remain frozen.

Companies that develop and distribute medical, chemical, and biological research supplies, as well as for microscopy applications could use this invention. Industrial fields using ultra-cold temperatures to temper steel and to treat machined parts would also benefit.
