The Environmental Assessment Program»s mission is to develop and employ advanced methods for analyzing samples from marine and freshwater environments for persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic compounds and their metabolites, fatty acid profiles, lipid components, and stable isotope patterns. These analyses generate information needed to understand effects of anthropogenic and environmental factors on the ecology of aquatic ecosystems. Acquisition of this knowledge is vital to the development of strategic management plans for our marine resources.

The primary expertise of the program is in chemistry, both organic and inorganic. Program members also have experience in biology and information technology, including database management and GIS.
