Improving Performance

Brookhaven is active in various detector performance groups, which test and improve the ATLAS detector’s ability to identify different types of particles. Brookhaven scientists help implement the “trigger,” which weeds out specific data to be saved for further analysis out of the one billion high-energy collisions taking place in the detector per second. The group also develops software to search for evidence of particle physics mysteries such as supersymmetry, dark matter, and the Higgs boson.
